Our second controversy concerns the lineage of Gov Thomas Dudley (and
others) back to Charlemagne. This is a (genealogically speaking) new theory,
first conceived (as far as I know) by one Frederick Lewis Wies, Th.D., in 1950.
This is the ONLY (again, as far as I know) place we Dudley's will ever find the
theory, and to the best of my knowledge nobody else has even approached it.
Mr. Weis traces the Good Governor through Captain Rogers wife, Susan
Thorne--then to Mary Purfoy, Sir John de Courtenay, through Alert I, through
Pepin, and then, of course, to Charlemagne.
The problem is, he can only cite references to 1032, and then using
"CP, which he doesn't translate or offer any idea as to what that is!
Before that date, he offers NO references whatsoever. In his little booklet, he
traces the line to HIMSELF. Could that be what he was after? Who knows?
However--I HAVE seen the book, and examined other evidence...and have to
say.......
This has been supported by a number of well known genealogists--and
appears to be (fan fare) VALID!!! However, there are still some few things
missing. While a link to Charelmagne may seem nice, what good would a link to
Charlemagne do for the Dudleys? Well, again, it WOULD be nice for the
decendants of Gov Thomas! Yes, come to think of it, it would be VERY
prestigious! But, alas, there is the problem of proof. And the problem of those
who scramble after it without caring for proof.
Here, again, is a very profound theory. I guess it would NOT hurt
someone to say--"there MAY be a link to Charlemagne in my past"--but please do
NOT add it to your database. While the evidence DOES support it, it is not
totally proven.
Again I say, the problem with Genealogy is that it is an
INEXACT hobby. We can ONLY research what is THERE--and when hard evidence
stops, so do we. It is fascinating to delve into "maybe this, or maybe that,"
but we CAN NOT put forth as factual things that are not.
I will entertain any opposing viewpoint. IF you write a reputable
opposing article, email me it, and IF well documented I WILL post it
on-site.
Here is a VERY good example of a rebuttal---see, it
didn't take long!! And, I DO post them!
